Looking for affordable motorcycle insurance can be difficult, but it’s essential if you enjoy riding. Like car insurance, motorcycle insurance is required in most states. That’s why we made getting motorcycle insurance quotes easy.
In this article, we’ll discuss the best motorcycle insurance companies, how to select motorcycle insurance, and whether or not you need motorcycle insurance.
What company has the best motorcycle insurance?
The best motorcycle insurance companies combine affordable prices, varying coverage options, and dependable customer service. Let’s take a look at a few of the best companies.
Nationwide
Nationwide offers some of the best insurance rates for motorcycles in the United States with good, cheap motorcycle insurance that costs around $590/year on average. You may even find rates under $300/year in some states. Nationwide provides particularly cheap bike insurance in Nebraska, Maine, North Dakota, Kansas, and Iowa.
When you choose Nationwide, you’ll also get outstanding service. The business has a rating of 0.53 on the NAIC Complaint Index. This means that Nationwide has around half as many customer complaints as an average competitor.
Nationwide helps people make sure their costs stay low with a disappearing deductible. For every year that you don’t have any accidents, your deductible will decrease by $100. Other motorcycle insurance discounts you can find with Nationwide include those for:
- Multiple policies
- Multiple vehicles
- Homeowners insurance
- Full payment in advance
- Completing a safety course for motorcycles
- Antilock brakes
- A theft-deterrent system
- A rider’s association membership, such as the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.)
Custom equipment, original equipment manufacturer (OEM), and roadside assistance coverage are included, making Nationwide one of the best motorcycle insurance providers for your modified or personalized bike.
Diaryland
Dairyland provides cheap bike insurance as well. Its roadside assistance and rental reimbursement coverage help people who use their motorcycles as their main vehicles. Dairyland also offers replacement cost coverage, or GAP insurance, for motorcycles that are less than three years old.
Progressive
Progressive insurance discounts are available along with a variety of insurance options. Many of them come at no extra cost. All of Progressive’s motorcycle insurance policies give owners the full replacement costs of their bikes after an accident. There’s no depreciation deduction.
Progressive’s original equipment manufacturer (OEM) insurance will replace any custom or original parts on your bike with identical parts. Progressive includes as much as $3,000 of coverage for custom parts, upgrades, and customizations with its collision and comprehensive insurance. If your bike is heavily customized you can raise that limit to $30,000.
Progressive also has accident forgiveness. Small-accident forgiveness starts from the moment your policy begins. You won’t experience any penalty for the first accident as long as it costs Progressive under $500. Progressive also offers large-accident forgiveness in some states for customers who have been with the company for five years and accident-free for more than three. In that case, you won’t be penalized with higher rates after your first crash even if the cost is higher than $500.

How to Select Motorcycle Insurance
Liability insurance is required in most states for motorcycles, as well as cars. You can also add collision and comprehensive insurance to protect your bike from damage in an accident, theft, or another event.
In some states, you can add medical payment, or MedPay, insurance to pay for medical bills if you or one of your passengers becomes injured in an accident. This insurance is similar to personal injury protection (PIP), but it doesn’t cover funeral expenses, childcare, or lost wages.
Trip interruption coverage pays for food, transportation, and lodging if you’re in an accident more than 100 miles from home. You can also get coverage for a trailer, custom parts, or accessories.
Do you need motorcycle insurance?
In most states, separate motorcycle insurance is required if you intend to operate your bike on public roads. Since riding a motorcycle can be more dangerous than driving a car, make sure you have plenty of medical or PIP coverage.
In winter, many insurers offer lay-up insurance when drivers put their motorcycles away. This is a good, cheap bike insurance option that protects you from theft and any damage during storage, but it won’t cover you while you’re driving your motorcycle.
Make sure you have the right coverage for your bike before taking it out for the first ride of the year this spring.
