- It’s a myth that having a red car will automatically increase your car insurance rates
- Some cars are more expensive to insure based on the number of times the make and model has been involved in an accident
- There are more important aspects of a car that impact the cost of insurance premiums
When you’re shopping for a car and see a red one, you might wonder whether it’s going to affect the cost of insurance.
In many instances, choosing a red color of a specific make and model isn’t going to have any impact on the premium. Instead, there are various other factorsthat an insurance company looks like.
Use our free rate comparison tool to find the best price for car insurance no matter what color your vehicle is!
Is a red car really more expensive to insurance than other cars?
When people pick a car color at the car lot, the choice is often based upon personal preferences. In terms of color psychology, red is aggressive and therefore it is popular especially with sports cars.
The aggressive color does not have any impact on the way that the driver actually drives the car, however. This stereotype is how the myth got started.
Somewhere along the line, people believed that they would be charged more for their car insurance if they bought a red car.
However, this has not stopped car companies from releasing red cars. Additionally, it has not stopped people from buying red cars.
Among the most popular car colors, however, is white and blue, according to Fortune Magazine.
This statistic identifies that, perhaps, people are worried about buying a red car for fear of how it will affect the cost of their car insurance. Or, maybe people just prefer white and blue over red.

How Color Might Impact the Cost of Insurance
When you get quotes for insurance online, there is no question about what color your car is. This omission is done for a variety of reasons.
- First, it’s nearly impossible to create a drop-down menu for the many colors that car manufacturers use on their different models.
- Second, there are also custom colors, making it even harder to determine what colors are on the market.
- Third, the insurance companies don’t look at the color of a car when factoring insurance costs.
There’s only one instance where the color might play into the cost of insurance. Insurance companies look at all of the details of a car, including the overall safety record.
If for example, you drive a black Honda Civic and the insurance company has been paying out a large number of claims on black Honda Civics (not any other color), it could cost you more.
Even though you could be a safe driver, the insurance company looks at statistics. Such an increase would likely happen after you have been with the insurance company for a while.
When you see an increase for no reason when you go to renew, it could be as a result of the insurance company looking at various trends from their claims department.
If you notice your insurance going up for no apparent reason, it’s a good idea to look at getting quotes from other companies.
Getting quotes online and comparing them will make it easier to get the coverage you need. It will also allow you to see who has the most cost-effective premium to fit within your budget.
The Other Factors that Go into the Cost of Premiums
Insurance companies look at a wide array of factors when determining the cost of your premium.
This premium is always individually calculated, which means your insurance premiums are going to be different than another person’s premiums, even if they drive the same car as you.
The factors insurance companies use are:
- The year, make, and model of your car
- How many miles you drive
- Where you live
- Age, sex, and gender
- Your driving record
- The level of coverage you have
Insurance companies simply don’t look at the color of your car unless they have had a big problem with one specific color inside of a make and model. Even then, it’s often not a part of the initial insurance quote process.
Ultimately, you get to drive the car you want to drive. It can be red, blue, green, white, silver, or any other color. Focus on the other aspects of car insurance quotes, such as the safety features in your car and your driving history.
